Chan Suk On was born and lives in Hong Kong. She graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a Bachelor of Photographic Design. She gained her Master of Arts in Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. On is an editor, photographer, and artist. She is inspired by everyday life experiences. Her artistic journey is going from documentary photography to conceptual art. Her first book "Chan Suk On Conceptual Photography "was published by Contemporary Art Station in 2022 in Barcelona. Her artworks have been exhibited nationally and in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, China, the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Paris, Vienna, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, Belgium, Canada, and Monaco.
Chan Suk On's artwork "A Sentimental Mechanism" and the photographic process have a unique connection, transforming a technical term into a profound metaphor. The heart, composed of the camera tool that captures the moment, is itself a medium for presenting emotional experiences to the world. It is ingenious and meaningful, connecting the object (camera components) with the emotion (heart).
Chan Suk On experimented with using old cameras which is a ready-made object as material for my work. I carefully unscrewed many small screws, discovering the secrets inside the camera.
I deconstructed and reassembled the loose pieces of old camera into a sculpture, it is like a ‘ microscope’ . The lens's function is to capture images to see the world in another way, like a third eye.It becomes the object of observation. The lens is being gazed at this moment. The standardized visual experiences of 16:9, 4:3 and 5:7 are given the viewer by consumer culture.
The ‘ microscope’ gives the viewer a sense of absurdity, impacting visual culture, and prompting reflection on the ways of seeing in this technological age. By disassembling the intricate mechanical details and presenting them in an irregular form, the aesthetics of mechanics are showcased. Through artistic transformation, my unused camera still retains its aesthetic value and let the object breathe.
