K Mueller

Kate Mueller has made art all her life, with occasional lengthy hiatuses. In her early to mid-twenties, she lived in New York City where she did large surreal oil paintings in her Manhattan loft. During this period she studied at the Art Students League and engaged in independent painting studies through Goddard College, Vermont. Among the artists she studied with were James Gahagan, Gabriel Laderman, and Anci Bozena Slovak.

In her late twenties, after a move to Vermont, she began working in pastel. For about 15 years, Mueller worked exclusively from the figure, eventually expanding into portraits and landscapes, in both pastel and oil. She worked nearly always from life, the model or plein air. Though this body of work is more representational, Mueller often broke up the space into abstract shapes with energetic colors and lines.

During the pandemic, Mueller returned to oil, creating abstract paintings incorporating biomorphic shapes, which she continues to this day. She is drawn to the human body and trees, which are often starting points for her work, and she is fascinated by the complexity that emerges from self-similar shapes. In an interview, Mueller said of her work, “Sitting in my studio, surrounded by various pieces-in-progress, their colors and curves connect and flow into one another, and I feel as if I’m working on one big painting, with each individual work a brief surfacing, one focused moment of expression. Underneath is some big shape-shifting feeling, a giant fractal of color and shape. I tune into a rhythm and deliver on the page a fragment of that big fractal, and in that fragment, something of the whole may inhere in it.”

Mueller has exhibited throughout Vermont, where she has lived for over 30 years. She has had solo exhibits at the Vermont Arts Council, Julian Scott Memorial Gallery (Northern Vermont University), and Christine Price Gallery (Castleton University) and was a featured artist at the Chaffee Art Center, Rutland. Other venues include the Governor’s Corridor, Montpelier, and Art in the Round Barn, Waitsfield. Her work is held privately, both nationally and internationally.
