Carita Schmidt is a Berlin-based visual artist and art mentor whose abstract work explores the interplay of movement, light, and identity. Born in Güstrow, Germany, and shaped by life across Finland, Sweden, Greece, and both East and West Germany, her multicultural perspective informs a visual language rooted in transformation and reflection.

Educated at the Dramatiska Institutet in Stockholm (BFA, 1983–86), Schmidt held her first solo exhibition in 1991 in Kavala, Greece. Since then, she has presented 16 solo exhibitions and participated in over 70 group shows across Europe and the U.S. Her work is held in both private and public collections, including the Graphothek Berlin, the Vafopoulio Cultural Center in Thessaloniki, and the Art Gallery MAGIC MOUNTAIN, Château Nico Lazaridi in Drama, Greece.

Schmidt’s abstractions are characterized by layered lines—looping like strands of DNA or dissolving into veils of light—that generate fluid visual fields. In series like Frequencies, she reduces each composition to its essentials, capturing the ephemeral nature of Mediterranean light and the rhythms of inner perception.

With a practice that merges technical precision and meditative presence, Carita Schmidt invites viewers into evolving visual spaces where form, gesture, and emotion continually unfold.

"My art is a play of movement and boundaries – a multilayered space where identity, time and light intertwine."

Carita Schmidt

This connection stems from my personal experience: In my work, I process identity and the imprints of my multicultural life – a life in which I have always been part of a greater whole while simultaneously standing on the outside. This perspective has sharpened my view: I observe things from a distance while moving through them – or life moves me. Movement has therefore become the guiding thread of my work.

As a painter, I work at the intersection of drawing and painting, combining fine liner, ink, acrylic, and oil paint in layered compositions that interweave and overlap. My paintings are abstract compositions, characterized by layered forms and lines - looping like strands of DNA or dissolving into veils of light- that generate fluid visual fields. They reflect the interplay of life, space, time and light – moments in which these elements collide, merge, separate, or dissolve.

Since 2023, the circular form has been at the center of my work. I use gold leaf selectively to highlight colours and shapes, enhancing reflections and contrasts. With parallel strokes, I describe paths, routes, and passages – evoking a codex of territories, marking boundaries or highlighting connections, guided by my interest for a larger view on life, society and humanities search for evolution.

I see my art as a visual refuge – providing space expanding and shifting between the visible and the invisible.

1983 – 86 BA, Dramatiska Institutet/University College of Film, Theatre and Television, Stockholm, SWE. Same time cross-media studies with Björn Lövin (1937-2009), one of Sweden’s most interesting conceptual and political artist.

Long residencies in Finland, Sweden, Germany (former East and West) and Greece. Based in Berlin, Germany, since 2012.
