Born in Zimbabwe, raised in Zambia, high-schooled in Pretoria, conscripted to South Africa's National Army Service, R. Michelle-Pentelbury eventually became a full-time artist, and now works from his busy studio on Canada’s Vancouver Island. A multiply awarded artist, as well as actor, singer, theatre director, teacher, and writer, Richard deploys his diverse and integrative interests into his often complex works, investing them with the metaphysical and symbolic. His preferred medium is most frequently with oil-glazes.
“Since art speaks independently to each of us, in differing voices during our times with it, we evidently bring our own lives to its presence. The feeling, or reaction, stirs; comprehending the esoteric alters with one’s ongoing knowledge; resonating with an image's implications is a dance with one’s changing affinities; and as such, the medium, the skills applied, and the intentions of the imagery may well continue to move in one's own translations. The intention is to provoke exploration of the human condition. Depictions of the metaphysical, in these terms, are an ongoing invitation to a dialogue.” ~R. Michelle-Pentelbury
