Working in tourism since 1970, I lived overseas and travelled around in Europe, America, Asia and Africa (11 years in Kenya). The last 22 years I lived in Palma de Mallorca / Spain and since 2015 I’m back in Germany.
I started painting as a child and meanwhile painting art is my passion, my most favorite hobby. With mostly strong colors I’m able to express my various impressions and ideas, which cool me down and relax.
I'm autodidact – of all tried out materials I prefer painting with acrylics and especially on wood. I get inspired by everything, what is surrounding me – art, books, culture, traditions, pictures, textiles, exhibitions, events, colors, light, sea, beach, sunrise and sunset, animals, landscapes, seasons, nature, plants and flowers, daily news – the list is neverending.
Travelling such a lot left its marks on my art. Especially the colors and the smell of Africa and Asia are deeply in my memory. My pictorial language mainly consists of a figurativeness reduced to the essential into which I ornamental transfer very harmonious forms. This is completed by my abilities of applying glowing colors. By achieving a correlation of abstract and figurative forms and color I’m able to give my work of art some sensual attractivity. The portrayal of perspectives and mostly the strong expression of bright colors are my trademark.
Being commented and complimented by friends, family and people around me, in the past years my colorful paintings have found some admirers.

Birgit Kalkofen’s Unique Vision
Birgit Kalkofen, aka Pepponi Art, has carved out a distinctive space for herself within the contemporary art world through a life enriched by extensive travel. Born in Germany, her early career In tourism took her across Europe, America, Asia and Africa, where she lived in Kenya for over a decade. The vivid landscapes and diverse cultures she encountered during her travels have left an indelible mark on her art, particularly in her use of color and form. Although self-thought, Kalkofen has developed a deeply personal visual language, favoring acrylics and mixed media, often working on wood to bring her expressive vision to life.
Kalkofen’s work is as diverse as her experiences. Her artistic practice revolves around the exploration of figurative forms that often border on the abstract, characterized by bold, vibrant color palettes and a unique sinthesis of shape and ornamentation. Over the years, her paintings have garnered international attention, with exhibitions in prestigious venued such as the Art Expo New York and Scope Miami, as well as various galleries across Germany and Spain. Her inclusion in numerous private collections globally attests to the universal appeal of her work, which strikes a balance between the abstract and the figurative, while remaining rooted in her deeply personal experiences.
Looking at her artworks, one is immediately struck by the harmony between the colors and the figurative elements. The recurring motifs of human faces and masks – often with exaggerated features – give her paintings a powerful symbolic resonance, drawing inspiration from both African and Asian iconography. In some ways, her work echoest he modernist abstraction seen in the early 20th century, particularly recalling the flatness and stylization found in Modiglian’s portraits or the symbolic geometry of Picasso’s African period. Yet, Kalkofen’s art remains firmly contemporary, with its bold, unapologetic celebration of color and form that engages viewers on both a visual and emotional level.
What makes Pepponi Art particularly noteworthy is its ability to evoke a sense of place and emotion, distilled into a visual language that is approachable as it is profound. Kalkofen’s work is a celebration of human expression, filtered through her unique lens of global experiences. The use of bright, almost incandescent colors not only draws the viewer’s eye but also invites them into a world that is at once familiar and otherworldly.
