Brigitte Thonhauser-Merk

Brigitte Thonhauser-Merk is a contemporary Austrian artist whose work embodies the maxim of Eugène Delacroix: "A picture should above all be a feast for the eyes." Brigitte lives in Perchtoldsdorf and uses a variety of techniques that she has honed in classes at the Volkshochschule in the 9th district of Vienna and in private lessons with renowned artists. Her inspirations are varied and come from nature, everyday objects and impressions she has gathered on her extensive travels around the world, as well as the influence of previous masters.

In her studio, Brigitte creates imaginative and personal artworks that go beyond mere representations of nature or people. Instead, she offers an abstracted vision of nature, often with an ornamental character. Her original fascination with lines is evident in many of her pieces, reflecting her cultural heritage from the Viennese Art Nouveau style, intertwined with modernist influences, which she picked up during numerous stays in France. More recently, Brigitte has been experimenting with painting techniques that incorporate controlled randomness and give her work a dynamic and unpredictable element.

Brigitte's artistic career has been marked by her participation in numerous solo and group exhibitions in major European cities as well as in China, Dubai, Tel Aviv and New York. Her talent has earned her several international accolades, including first prize in the Illustration category at the Global Art Award in Dubai in November 2017 for her work "Yellow Bouquet."

In addition to her artistic endeavors, Brigitte has a strong academic background. She graduated from the University of Vienna and earned a master's degree in Romance Studies and a bachelor's degree in Art History in 2014. This academic background enriches her artistic practice and gives her a deep understanding of the historical and cultural contexts that shape her work.

Brigitte Thonhauser-Merk's art is a proof of her ability to combine traditional influences with modern techniques, resulting in visually arresting works with a rich cultural resonance. Her continuous experimentation and dedication to her craft ensure that her art remains a living and evolving feast for the eyes.

I understand creativity as a divine gift, and therefore I feel a great responsibility to let this light shine with joy into this world through my artworks.
