Deanne Eccles

Deanne Eccles is an artist whose unique approach to oil painting sets her apart as a significant emerging talent in the art world. Rather than adhering strictly to analytic techniques, Eccles embraces a sensory-driven methodology deeply rooted in Goethe’s Colour Theory, exploring the emotional and perceptual impact of color.

Her artistic practice intertwines various disciplines, weaving together elements of performance, music, dance, theatre, and literature to create immersive environments that invite viewers into the dialogue of her work. Despite this diverse range of mediums, her oil paintings remain the focal point of her artistic expression, serving as a canvas for her explorations of abstraction and spatial dynamics.

With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree specializing in painting from La Trobe University, earned in 1993, Eccles initially directed her artistic energy toward theatre and movement. This led her to study the innovative ‘Body Weather’ practice under the guidance of Min Tanaka, a luminary in body movement. Engaging with this philosophy profoundly influenced her subsequent performance pieces, as she delved into body and spatial interactions, influenced further by the teachings of Body Weather artist Tess De Quincey and Ilse Middendorff's Body Voice work. Eccles' integration of Rudolf Steiner’s theory of the 12 Senses remains a vital influence in her practice today.

Furthering her studies in Venice and Switzerland, Eccles immersed herself in Goethe’s color theory and various techniques of color application. Her pivotal return to painting occurred in Turkey, where she began a journey into abstraction while continuing her research into performance. In Spain, she innovated her practice of ‘Body Sense Perception’, combining her training in Flamenco Dance with a somatic approach that explores the visceral experiences evoked by her paintings. This synergy among disciplines amplifies the viewer's awareness of the human engagement with art.

Eccles’ work has garnered attention globally, having been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Pieces from her collection are housed in respected institutions, including the Australian National Library and La Trobe University. Notably, her artwork has recently been featured at the Contemporary Art Station in Madrid, with upcoming exhibitions slated for the Paris Art Fair and the Red Dot Art Fair in Miami.

Beyond her artistic pursuits, Eccles is recognized for her commitment to environmental activism and community engagement in Victoria, Australia. Her contributions earned her the title of National Nature Champion in 2015, and she played a significant role in the ‘Great Dividing Range’ film for the Australian Conservation Foundation. Moreover, her involvement as a pioneer in the grassroots movement ‘Knitting Nannas of Toolangi’ highlights her dedication to uniting artistry with environmental consciousness.

As Deanne Eccles continues to evolve as an artist, her insightful blend of color theory, sensory awareness, and interdisciplinary exploration positions her as a compelling figure to watch in the contemporary art scene.

“Art is more than an image upon a wall. It can have profound psychological and emotional affects, which we may not even be aware of.” Through the techniques I have created, with 'Body Sense Perception', my intention is to bring these affects to consciousness and allow the onlooker to have more of a relationship and sense of deep connectedness with Abstract Art.
