Britt-Marie Tidemand

Britt-Marie Tidemand, a Swedish artist, grounds her artistic philosophy in a profound belief in the transformative power of art and the significance of human connection. Her creative journey is fueled by a desire to shape and create, a motivation that has guided her actions and decisions throughout her life. Tidemand views life as an opportunity for inspiration, warmth, and goodness in all endeavors. To her, art serves as a medium of expression that goes beyond conventional definitions; she challenges the traditional concept of "good art," asserting that true artistry is found in the subjective experiences of the viewer.

In her work, Tidemand strives to elicit a personal response, encouraging viewers to engage with her use of color and design while forming their interpretations. Her artistic process is multifaceted, comprising two distinct approaches. In her more abstract method, she begins by exploring various shades of oil paint, characterized by a spontaneous and dynamic application of colors that creates a vibrant yet chaotic foundation. As she progresses, she introduces shapes and textures using brushes, knives, and other tools, occasionally incorporating materials like sand or fabric into the canvas.

Tidemand starts with a simple sketch, gradually building the composition through numerous layers of oil paint. This technique often culminates in vivid representations of human and animal forms, capturing the essence of her reflections and observations. Through her diverse methods, Tidemand creates artworks that invite contemplation and resonate with the personal experiences of those who encounter them.

When I reflect on my life so far, two words stand out as driving forces behind my actions and decisions—creating and shaping. These have guided me, both consciously and unconsciously, through every chapter of my journey. For me, life is about being inspired and feeling the warmth and goodness in everything I do.

But what is "good" art? The art world often defines and categorizes what is and isn’t art, but the real question we ask ourselves is often, "Is this good art?" My art doesn’t need to be a platform for debate or provoke a specific thought. Instead, it’s an invitation—a doorway into a world where each viewer can create their own experience.

In some of my paintings, I do have a thought or message I want to convey. I can share that with you, but it doesn’t mean you’ll see it the same way. And that’s the beauty of art—it’s not about imposing my ideas on you, but rather offering you the freedom to explore, to enjoy the colors and the design, and to create your own interpretation. My hope is that when you stand before my work, you find something that resonates with you, something that makes you pause and perhaps even sparks your own creative thoughts.
