Carmen Schaefer is an award-winning artist who transforms her lifelong journey of constant travel into captivating visual narratives.

Raised in a Navy family, her transient upbringing instilled a sense of rootlessness, which echoes throughout her work. Drawing from a deep appreciation for Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist masters, especially Lautrec, Carmen blends expressive techniques with a keen sense of realism. Her work—spanning drawing, painting, and mixed media—explores themes of identity, memory, and emotion with haunting beauty.

Carmen’s art has been showcased in over 50 exhibitions worldwide, earning acclaim for its introspective depth. Splitting her time between her lakeside cottage in Conesus Lake, NY, and a historic studio loft in Rochester, she continues to push boundaries, merging personal reflection with universal human experience. Each piece she creates invites viewers into a world of layered emotions, where past and present intersects.

As an artist, I am drawn to the expressive possibilities of black and white, as well as the dynamic use of color, on paper. My work combines elements of realism and impressionism, blending the two styles into something uniquely my own. I often begin with a realistic foundation, but as the piece evolves, it takes on a more expressive quality.

I employ a variety of mark-making techniques to convey emotion and texture in my artwork. Bold brushstrokes and gestural lines, to delicate washes and intricate detailing, allow me to create dynamic compositions that captivate the viewer's eye and evoke a sense of movement and energy.

Layering and texture are key elements of my artistic practice. I build depth and complexity in my artwork through successive layers of color, line, and texture, creating richly textured surfaces that invite viewers to explore the subtle nuances of my creations.

I use shadows prominently in my work, allowing them to envelop isolated figures and barren landscapes, adding depth and emotion. These shadows create a tension between light and dark that drives much of my composition.

Inanimate objects and empty spaces also play a significant role in my work. They often serve as symbols of memory, inviting a sense of nostalgia and reflection. Through this process, I aim to explore the interplay of light, shadow, and emotion, offering viewers a window into the complex layers of human experience, the poignancy of memory, and the subtle undercurrents of emotion that shape our lives.
