Skye Elizabeth James is an award-winning Australian contemporary artist whose work is both a sanctuary for healing and a force for social advocacy. Her studio, Art Side of the Moon, is where she translates the chaos of the world and her own lived experiences into visual expressions focused on mental health awareness and the journey of self-discovery. This process is deeply personal, rooted in the belief that art has the power to inspire, heal, and transform.

James employs a unique and compelling practice of abstract impressionism and mixed media. She goes beyond traditional acrylics and oils by intentionally integrating unconventional elements like found objects, sentimental items, and original poetry or prose directly into her compositions. This fusion of words and images creates immersive, layered artworks that challenge societal norms and invite viewers to engage on a profound, interpretive level.

Her professional foundation, including a Fine Arts Diploma (TAFE NSW, 2004) and early technical training in black-and-white photography with the Wilderness Society, underpins her precise, emotive work. Her commitment to community and institutional engagement is evident through her active participation in the Dobell Festival and Lake Mac Open Studios, and her inclusion in the local yapang gallery’s Off the Wall exhibition. James is a member of the Professional Artists Association and the Museum of Art and Culture Lake Macquarie, and has actively participated in the re-instatement of the Artists’ Code of Practice with NAVA.

As a highly decorated artist, James has earned significant international recognition, including the Masterful Mind Award (Circle Foundation for the Arts, 2024) and the Collector's Choice Award from ArtTour International Magazine (2021). She is a regularly featured artist in international publications, including Spotlight Magazine (Paris). James is Happy to be including in upcoming exhibition with Thiea studios “Art of Her” exhibition highlighting the strength of woman for the white ribbon foundation James’s combination of technical mastery, rigorous professional affiliation, and deeply personal resonance makes her work not only culturally significant but also highly investable within the contemporary Australian and international art markets.

I established my art practice and studio, Art Side of the Moon, as a place of healing, a sanctuary where I can escape the chaos of the world and delve into the depths of my imagination. My art reflects this inner world as I find visual expression for my thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

I employ a diverse range of materials and techniques to bring my visions to life. From traditional mediums like acrylic and oil to unconventional elements like found objects and sentimental objects from my past, I explore the limitless possibilities of artistic expression. Each piece is a blend of realism and abstraction, employing bold colors and loose, gestural brushstrokes.

I often integrate my written work into my visual art, using poetry and prose to add layers of meaning and depth to my compositions. By combining words and images, I aim to create a more immersive and thought-provoking experience for the viewer. My work delves into the complexities of mental health, domestic violence advocacy, and personal healing.

Through my art, I challenge societal norms and embrace alternative perspectives. I have a passion for helping others and I believe in the power of art to inspire, to heal, and to transform. I find my voice through my art and hope to inspire others to find a voice as well. My work is intended to connect with the viewer on deep levels that only art can express.
