Josip Rubes: From Medical Precision to Geometric Abstraction in the European Art Market
Croatian painter Josip Rubes, born in 1942 in Jastrebarsko, represents a distinctive case within the Central European art landscape, where a dual career in medicine and visual art has informed a disciplined yet expressive practice. Educated at the Medical Faculty of the University of Zagreb, from which he graduated in 1970 and later specialized in internal medicine, Rubes developed his artistic language alongside a demanding professional life. His formal engagement with painting was further consolidated through studies at the Arthouse College of Visual Arts in Ljubljana, where he completed a degree in painting in 2012.
Since relocating in 1972 to Krapinske Toplice, in the Croatian Zagorje region, Rubes has drawn sustained inspiration from the area’s rolling landscapes and seasonal transformations. This environment, known for its thermal springs and pastoral character, shaped an extensive early body of work centered on landscape, often executed in dry pastel. Over decades, he has built an oeuvre exceeding one thousand works, reflecting both technical consistency and a sustained engagement with place.
Rubes’s practice underwent a significant shift in the late 2000s, when he began to explore abstraction with increasing intensity. Influenced by the legacy of Jackson Pollock and the broader language of action painting, his work moved away from direct representation toward gestural and process-driven compositions. This transition did not abandon his earlier sensitivity to nature but rather translated it into rhythm, movement, and chromatic interplay.
In recent years, his focus has evolved further toward geometric abstraction. This phase introduces a heightened sense of structure and precision, balancing intuitive composition with calculated spatial organization. As the artist notes, “My style of painting, especially geometric abstraction, requires precision in the execution of geometric forms and lines, imagination in composing the overall structure, and exceptional concentration in the interaction of colors.” The complexity of each work is closely tied to its scale and the density of its geometric elements, with time investment varying accordingly.
Despite this move toward abstraction, the underlying impetus of Rubes’s work remains rooted in observation. The cyclical variations of nature continue to inform his palette and compositional energy. He emphasizes the emotional intent of his paintings, aiming to evoke optimism, vitality, and a sense of joy. This continuity between observation and abstraction positions his recent output within a broader discourse on the transformation of landscape into visual language.
Rubes’s exhibition history underscores a sustained and active presence within both national and international contexts. He has held approximately 80 solo exhibitions and participated in around 300 group shows across Croatia and abroad. His work has also been featured in a range of international publications, including Current Masters (World Wide Art Books, 2019), Important World Artists (World Wide Art Books, 2020), and Art Universal: The Great Encyclopedia of International Art (2020), as well as more recent volumes such as Vincent van Gogh Tribute (Contemporary Art Station, Barcelona, 2024), Art Now: Internationally Recognized Artists (2024), Future of Art: Global Masterpiece Award (2024), and 100 Artists of Europe (2025).
Within the art market context, Rubes occupies a position characteristic of mature, regionally anchored artists whose production bridges figurative and abstract traditions. His extensive output, combined with consistent exhibition activity and inclusion in international survey publications, contributes to a stable profile among collectors interested in Eastern and Central European art. The evolution from landscape to action painting and ultimately to geometric abstraction reflects both responsiveness to global artistic dialogues and a continued commitment to personal visual inquiry.
